The Texas Annexation of 1845
The North was completely against the annexation of Texas, but in the South it was pretty popular. It was going to be another slave state, so of course the North was going to hate it and the South was going to love it. The question of admitting Texas to the United States was favored by the pro-slave states, the South, and opposed by the anti-slave states, the North. Texas was admitted to the Union as the 28th state. Texas had just claimed their independence from the Republic of Mexico when the Union was questioning the admission of Texas. December 29, 1845 Texas was finally considered the 28th state. They were afraid of annexing Texas because the Mexican leader said that it would be equivalent to declaring war to the Republic of Mexico. The Texas Annexation led to many problems including the Mexican-American War and later the Civil War started.
I chose this picture because it shows how a poster would look like back when the Texas Annexation was happening. It shows how some people did not agree with Texas being admitted because they didn't want another slave state. These posters usually would try to persuade others to change their opinion on the annexation of Texas. Some of the posters were for the annexation of Texas, and some were against. This poster in particularly was trying to say that the controversy of the Texas Annexation would lead to the Civil War and they needed to stop it before it was to late.
