Election of 1860
The Election of 1860 was one of the biggest elections in American history. The Northern Democrats, Republicans, Constitutional Union Party, and Southern Democrats all had a candidate representing them in the election. Northern Democrats felt that Stephan Douglas had the best chance to defeat the black republicans. The republicans felt that Abraham Lincoln would be the best to represent the North. The Constitutional Union Party nominated John Bell as their candidate for President. The Southern Democrats nominated Vice-President John C. Breckenridge as their candidate for president. Lincoln won the election with 40% of the popular vote, and 180 electoral votes. This caused seven states to succeed from the Union. The seven states were South Carolina, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Georgia. These 7 states joined together to form the Confederate States of America.
I chose this picture because it shows the percentage of the population that voted for each candidate. It also shows which candidate was for each party. I feel like it is a good representation of how many people voted for each candidate and how slim of a margin Abraham Lincoln beat Stephen Douglas. Lincoln won the popular vote by 10.4% which is less than the total percentage of the lowest candidate, John Bell.
